I've wanted to do this paddle for a couple of years. This is the year it happens.

Let's put together a flotilla worthy of the adventure. : )

Imagine the bragging rights - "I conquered the Detroit River!"

Target date is Saturday May 16th, with a rain date of Sunday the 17th. This is the week BEFORE Memorial Day weekend.

Approximately 25 miles, all downstream. I will be looking for a good put-in as an alternate to Belle Isle. I will also look at a couple of different routes (it's a big river and there is more than one way to paddle it).

Over the next couple of weeks I will be posting more details about shuttles, routes, etc. as the details firm up. Also, there will be maps, naturally.

I'm 99% certain the take-out will be at Point Mouillee, unless someone comes up with a better take-out...

OK - I'm officially calling a halt on this one...

I thought I could get a few experienced paddlers involved but it hasn't worked out...

The couple of "maybe" answers don't add up to a competent paddler core for participation. This is not to cast doubt on the skill level of ANYONE who has expressed interest to me about joining this outing. However, the sketchy availability of paddlers and the low number of participants leave me uneasy...

The serious, potentially hazardous currents in the Detroit River and the expedition length of the day's mileage combine to make this a true endeavor and not just any group paddle. Not even I am crazy enough to go it alone or in too small a group. The current is very strong this spring with the high water levels we are experiencing this year.

And yes, even though it would be within site of shore the whole way, those strong currents and the abundance of sea wall lining the banks make any swim to safety deceptively difficult...

I'd like to thank everybody for their interest in this paddle and the support you've shown me during the planning process...

This is a dream of mine that I feel is only to be deferred for another time, not denied totally. Just bad timing I guess.

Thank you all, once again, for your support.

See You On The Water,
Rob

So when is the Plan B date? I'm in if the date works out, I know what you're going through. Trying to organize more than three people for a singular activity is like herding cats.

Herding Cats... Right you are...

Got a busy schedule coming up with preplanned stuff like SBIKR (PLUG) and some other trips...

Maybe I'll survey some people and see what date works. Of course, you will be on the A list of contacts...

Thanx, Eric...
