Rhurbarb, the easiest way to get on a GC trip at this late a date would be to go commercial. The next easiest would be to start trolling for private trips with an open spot. Finally, you can sign on with the Park Service to enter the lottery for last-minute trip cancellations (see http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/whitewater-rafting.htm).

Definitely erase any idea of sneaking onto the river. It most commonly fails (you have to go 225 miles (360 km) without getting caught), and the penalties are pretty severe.

Hollywood is just 20-30 minutes from me. I might be able to hook you up with a buddy who has a scarab, you could possibly paddle it. It's not got the stock outfitting, but would give you an idea of the size.

And you'd be welcome to try my megatron.

Let me know with as much warning as you can give me and I'll see if I can get a few days free to paddle round with you.

What class WW would you be looking for?

Hi Geoff .April or May sounds good to come over as its not so long to wait ...
I found out my cousin lives near Hollywood ,maybe you live around the area if not then wont be a problem il have the car.Il Make sure its got unlimited miles though Thanks for the tip.
I must admit id love a paddle down the Grand Canyon that would be a dream come true for me .Trips there from the Uk seem to be pricey..Maybe jump in the Grand canyon at night with head torches when no ones looking ....only kidding..
Il be coming over with no schedule just go with the flow i guess but cram as much fun as possible in on the way..Skydive hmmmmm maybe lol
Took your advice on the Scarab and Mega said theres a 10 week wait minimium for a Scarab to be made ,They have two customers boats there at the factory which i can sit in and try for size but they havnt got one i can try on the water which is a bit of a pain ...Il look out for a second hand one and probably sell my reflex...
Talk to you soon Geoff ...With Thanks Rhurbarb

Our Rivers are pretty open. Very few have restrictions, although some require a permit. This is most common on the popular mutli-day trips, like the Rogue and Grand Canyon. These permits are designed primarily to prevent overcrowding, and can be tough to get.

There are a few rivers in California, like the Toulumne, that require a permit for a day paddle, but I've never failed to get one by just showing up. Not even sure if that ever happens.

the bigger limitation in the rivers here is that we have a lot of rivers, but they fall pretty much into one of three categories.
1) Free-flowing/snow melt - Pretty common. Rivers that use snow for their source. Tend to be good from March/April - June/July. If I had to pick a time to come to CA, it'd be in April or May. Pretty sure you'd be able to find some classic WW.

2) Dam control. We've got a fair number of dams in CA. Combined with the number of Rivers we have, that means there is almost always something to paddle. If you are willing to drive. October-December can be slim pickings, so I'd avoid that time of year.

3) Rain. This are less common. Of course, many of our snow-fed rivers can jump up during a rain storm, but we have a few rivers, particularly in Southern California, that only run after a big storm. Things like Sespe creek, Piru creek, San Gabriel, etc. This tend to be tough to catch. Often they are either too low, or stupid high. finding them at the right flow could be tricky.

As for surf, well, it's California. There is frequently surf. Winters tend to be better if you like big stuff. Northern CA in winter is head high and double overhead isn't contstant, but it's not rare either. Summers in SoCal tend to be inconsistent, but when a southern hemi storm kicks up a big south swell, surfing 12 foot waves in a rash guard is pretty hard to beat.

If I were planning a trip from Europe, i'd probably come in the spring, rent a car with unlimited mileage, and keep my schedule open. You could easily paddle classic stuff everyday until your arms drop off.
