Ecuador Day 3&4

Early on Day 3 we left Borja and went to Tena, about an hours drive away. We stopped on the way to do a really pretty river, though the water was a bit low. I have the name of the River, but not handy. It was fun, and I think would be super classic with more water.

After paddling, we headed to Tena, which seems to be a bit of a rough place. Not dangerous, just very impovrished, gritty and run down. Our hotel is nice, and the area is gorgeous, but not much else interesting aobut Tena. If you wer… Continue

Ecuador - Day 1&2

After some flight delays, I got into Quito at about 11 pm Sat. Night. I was pretty beat, and though my hotel was located near a noisy disco, I fell right asleep. 8am found me at the hotel lobby, meeting my group. 2 guides, and 6 paddlers. 3 guys, 3 girls. Ages 30-46. Everyone married, but not travelling with their spouses. Super nice, friendly crew.

Sunday was a 1/2 travel day, we drove over a nearly14,000 foot pass to the Town of Borja, wher ewe have a very nice lodge. We outfitted boats, and… Continue

I think paddling at night would be no more dangerous than paddling in the fog, maybe safer. I enjoy it too. I haven't shopped for a GPS in many years, but no matter what they say, be wary of any waterproof claims and consider a drybag that lets you…

Lance, If you want an extra paddler on your trip, let me know. I'm taking some classes this year that make it a little tough, but if it's not a class weekend, i'm almost always game. Geoff

Sorry, just to be clear, the trip report I linked to is NOT mine. It's a freind of mine, Duane Strosaker. I've not done that trip before, but was inspired by Duane and will be doing nearly the same trip in Sept. Geoff

Alex, Exploring from the base camp at Scorpion is an awesome way to see the islands. The beach is exposed, and can get a bit rough for landing/launching, but is mostly pretty managable. Folks have got into trouble out at the islands. PLEASE make s…

Pretty good. I'm actually working a lot less in July so that means more kayaking! I want to get ready for the springtime when all the snow melt is happening. Woohoo!

Thank you for your comments and questions. I call it the PaddlePac. You can go to paddlepac.com to see more of the prototype, I plan on having a retail model ready for the summer. One important aspect is the ability to disassemble and fit in a storage bag. The raised arms allow the kayak to turn under the unit unobstructed and the only problem I had was going against a strong current. The unit will be aluminum frame, wood deck and pvc pontoons.
Thank you again. Later, Rob K.
