It really was mind blowing. My friend and I were screaming and yelling like a couple of kids. I know the dolphins were messing with us. They would dive like they're going under us, then turn and surface in front or behind. I took about 90 shots to g…

Is Duane Strosaker on this site? Perhaps he could share the name of the GPS his buddy Jim used in their foggy crossing. I'll look for a contact on his website.

I think paddling at night would be no more dangerous than paddling in the fog, maybe safer. I enjoy it too. I haven't shopped for a GPS in many years, but no matter what they say, be wary of any waterproof claims and consider a drybag that lets you…

Lance, If you want an extra paddler on your trip, let me know. I'm taking some classes this year that make it a little tough, but if it's not a class weekend, i'm almost always game. Geoff

Feeding frenzy

So Sunday my buddy and I are heading out of Channel Island Harbor towards the first oil platform and we see a group of pelicans diving bombing into the water about a mile out. So we paddle over and we come upon the birds, seals and a pod of dolphins attacking a school of fish. The dolphins are jumping all around us, as close as a couple of feet. SO awesome. I had one dolphin bump my kayak as he swam under. My buddy actually had a group of 4 or 5 seals following him for a while. That freaked him… Continue

Santa Cruz

Took a trip up to Costanoa Lodge above Santa Cruz, CA. during our companies Xmas shutdown. I brought the kayak up there and managed to squeek about 4 hours early Wed morning. Sunday thru Tues it was cloudy and rainy, but Wed morning cleared up and it was cold but beautiful.

Coming out of the ha… Continue

Kayaking surfing

Just spent that last hour at the beach near my work watch a guy surf kayaking. Looks like alot of fun. I guess I would have to strap myself into my SOT tho....maybe some velcro on the seat of my shorts.......And I don't think I can do cut backs with a 16ft kayak.

Santa Cruz, CA

Okay, I'm going to Costonoa resort during our shutdown between Xmas and New Years. Costonoa is about 10 miles north of Santa Cruz, CA. Does anybody know any good launching spots around there? Or in Santa Cruz itself ?

Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I'm looking for a hand held GPS too. I want one that has a tracking option.

Looks like you've seen some pretty terrific views of nature on your boat... great pictures. As a newbie to kayaking, I've quickly realized how much I have passed without ever noticing on motor boats.

Hey Lance, did 3 2/4 miles on the Little River last week, we were camping at Hendy Woods and took to the water while the girls went shopping in Mendocino.

Lansing, Elkhorn Slough is a great place to poke around in also. It's South of Santa Cruz, the web site is: http://www.elkhornslough.org/

ls Lansing, how was Mendocino? We sure had good weather in this part of the State that weekend. I did 10.5 miles on the lower Russian River Sunday myself.

Launch from the beach in front of Van Damme State Park and go to the north. You'll encounter sea caves like you can't believe. There is one there that you enter prior to rounding the point that goes about 100 feet before it comes out on the other side. From there just keep close to the cliffs and stick to the North and one after another will pop up for you to explore. Wear a helmet and take a flashlight with you because some of them go in so far, you lose the daylight. There's also a seal colony there with the smaller harbor seals. It's a semi protected paddle in that there is a series of rocks that break up the waves prior to where you'll be at. Check it out and tell me about it when you get back.

While your there, sample some of the Anderson Valley Brewing Companies finest. They make a dark oatmeal stout called Barney Flats that I love. It's a sipping beer that's incredible!
