Had a nice paddle today with my wife in the Northstar Tandem. We paddled about 15 miles in 3.5 hours, in pretty calm conditions. Very good times.

"they are artificial islands with oil drilling rigs on them. They are named Grissom, White, Chaffee and Freeman after the three astronauts who died in Apollo 1, plus Theodore Freeman who was the first member of the space program to die in the line of duty (in a T-38 trainer accident)."

The islands are man made, and look to be some type of petroleum storage or refining or similar. There is a fair bit of oil production in the area, and Long Beach is a pretty industrial port. I was actually planning on doing a little research today, but 98% sure it's oil related..

Neat trip. What are the islands with the storage tanks shown in the map? They look industrial. Are they man-made?
