> Blake, wow, looks like a GREAT trip, those islands are as beautiful as I imagined. I must get out there! It looked awesome the wench lowering boats into the water. Thanks so much for the links, the trip you took is exactly what I was wondering about. Happy to see it's out there.
> Geoff, yeah sans the ferry, I'm diggin' the idea of chargin' out there how Blake and his group did...I mean if one can travel taking only 'bulkhead capacity' then ferry not required, IMO.
Soon as you get settled and shoud you post up a little guiding action know I'll be in line...a sea kayak will find it's way back into your life, the tide of life will see to that. I just got a feeling.

How could I forget this part .... I just came back from such a trip. We paddled from Channel Islands Harbor (Oxnard) to Anacapa. Spent night, went around the island exploring & caving and returned on third day. Blogs of trip are here: http://seakayaking.meetup.com/40/calendar/9548357/

Island Packers in Ventura (805) 642-1393 will allow you to take your kayak (based on availability) for a nominal fee. They run to Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara islands. All permit camping of some sort. See: http://www.nps.gov/chis/ for details. (San Clemente & San Nicolas islands are Navy property and off limits.) Lastly there is Catalina. At present I'm not aware of a passenger ferry in any harbor that allows sea kayaks. Supposedly there is a freight ferry out of San Pedro that will deliver to Avalon. But you have to make your own transportation. Alternatively, you could paddle across. Cabrillo Bch in San Pedro to the Isthmus is around 22 miles. (That one is on the docket for fall.) Lot's to explore!

You can (or could, I haven't checked in a while) take kayaks on the Ferry. There is an extra charge, of course. I'll let you know when we land in SoCal and get settled. I'll have to get a sea kayak before I can go, for so long I was working places where I've had access to fleets of boats, so I never bought a sea kayak!

I've never been...can one take kayaks out if they choose to ride the ferry? I'll have to Google it I guess to see about ferry info, cost etc. Well if you get back into guiding out that way be sure to post something up here, I'd sure be interested.

I have paddled out to the Channel Islands. It's a fun paddle, but honestly, I prefer to just take the ferry and have more time to explore the islands.
I love it out there. I used to guide TONS there, and never got tired of it.

Have you ever paddled out to the Channel Islands? That is something I'd like to do, mileage wise it doesn't seem too bad. I do wonder about the logistics, I'd like to do something like paddle out one day, snorkel around, hike here and there, maybe see a fox, camp one night, paddle home.
Southern CA might be a nice base camp for adventures like that.
